The New Word Game

I got the idea when I read that young people use a vocabulary of only 400 words. I thought of inventing a more encouraging ‘dictionary’ by choosing 700 words and dividing them up in 100 cards. There are verbs, adjectives, articles, nouns, adverbs, prepositions and all the words you need to make up a sentence. Up to 17 players can play this game.

What You Need
You will need a sheet of paper, a pen for each player, and a timer (watch, alarm clock, kitchen timer etc.)

Objective
To make up a sentence that makes sense using one word from each card.

How to Calculate Your Score
Each word used to make up your sentence is worth one point. Each word used in the opposite sense is worth half a point. The highest score you can achieve is 7. The winner of each round wins an extra point. If there are two players who have scored the same number of points the winner is the one whose turn it is to play. The winner is the player who scores the highest number of points after having finished the rounds.

Bonus and Malus
If you find a word with colour for each card you will get a bonus of 7 points which should be added to the points you have scored for the sentence. The same applies if you find a number in each of the seven cards. The player with the worst sentence will receive compliments from the other players.

How to Play
The verbs are in the infinitive but you can change them into any tense you want. You can change a word from singular into plural except for the articles or pronouns.
You can use the punctuation you want. You cannot use three or more verbs or adjectives consecutively. You will find 20 jokers with nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and articles- use them when you want making sure your respect the type of word indicated. The time limit is 5 minutes, after which you will not be able to correct or write again. If you do you will have to skip that round. The number of rounds will equal the number of players but you can decide the number if there are more than 7 players. Each player will be given 7 cards. Wait till all the cards have been handed out, then set the timer and turn the cards over. Lay them out as you wish and start writing your sentence. A hint: write down whatever you come up with! Remember you only have 5 minutes to make up your sentence. Are you ready? Set the timer. Start playing!
When 5 minutes are up choose the best sentence you have come up with and read it out aloud. The other players will have to vote for the best. If the number of players is even the author of the sentence will not have a right to vote. It doesn’t matter if the sentence is banal or poetic – what does matter is that it has to make sense. Of course, the better the sentence the more prestige the player will have. And a lot depends on how you read and convey the sentence to the others. The players will have to decide how good and correct the sentence is . If the others think that the sentence is no good you will not get any points for it. In the last round whoever’s turn it is will read out his sentence and will get a point for each word (eg. A sentence with 6 words will get six points). The others must always check that the words in the sentence correspond to the words on the cards. If one of the words is not accepted, that player will get 0. Whoever scores the most will be the winner. At the end of the game you can even praise the player who has come up with the best sentence!
